Öko-Zentrum NRW

About us

The Öko-Zentrum NRW (translatable as Eco-Center North Rhine-Westphalia) is one of Germany's top addresses for sustainable building. We offer a highly qualified team with over 20 years of experience.

Our services are determined by three main areas:

We plan renovation and refurbishment measures and new buildings (residential and non-residential). We further support clients and architects with engineering services. These include thermal insulation certificates, thermal bridge calculations, thermal simulations, investigations into moisture protection and sound insulation certificates.

As a specialist institute, we advise private and public clients from all over Germany in on demand planning, targets for building quality, energy concepts/energy optimisation, cost-effectiveness, selection of building materials and building certification.

Building experts qualify themselves with our courses as "building energy consultants", "expert planners for energy efficiency and passive houses", "audited planners for building biology" or as "specialists for the protection from mould and moisture". We conduct seminars and in-house training courses on sustainable building and the Assessment System for Sustainable Building (BNB).

Cooperation with Japan

Since 2008, the Öko-Zentrum NRW has also been active in Japan. Since then there has been a close cooperation with the Ishikawa Prefecture with the aim of improving the energy efficiency of residential buildings in the region. To this end, in 2010 we issued Japan's first energy certificate for buildings, founded a development association and trained numerous building experts in the issuing of such energy certificates. There have also been good contacts with the MLIT (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) for many years, as the Öko-Zentrum NRW is responsible for the professional exchange between the building ministries in Berlin and Tokyo. The aim of the exchange is to find joint solutions to reduce the energy requirements of buildings. Such solutions can lie in political measures, but also in innovative technical approaches.

Start-Up Centre HAMBAU

Öko-Zentrum NRW – this is the name given to both the industrial park on the former site of the Saxony coal mine and the company with its headquarters in the half-timbered house on Sachsenweg. After the coal mine was closed in 1976, the North Rhine-Westphalia State Development Corporation (LEG, now NRW.URBAN) purchased the site in 1980 with money from the Ruhr property fund. An ecologically oriented industrial park was created on the site. Today, around 30 companies with 500 jobs are located in the industrial park. The largest of these are the OBI hardware store, the EURO railway and the Öko-Zentrum NRW.

The building “HAMBAU” is embedded in the Öko-Zentrum NRW business park. It is the first business incubator in Germany to be built consistently in accordance with ecological building principles. HAMBAU is therefore the first choice for business start-ups and young entrepreneurs: it offers a promising address in a representative, award-winning architecture. The room program and rental conditions are also tailored to the requirements of young companies: the offer ranges from small office units for service providers (from 36 sqm) to workshop or production halls (from 270 sqm). In addition, there are separately rentable warehouses (115 sqm) and jointly used facilities such as meeting rooms, tea kitchens and showers.
